Oppo has announced its new flagship smartphone, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra. Three features have caught my eye: the camera, the design, and the display.
Opp Find X7 Ultra
Oppo is bringing four lenses to the main camera assembly, all of which come with a 50-megapixel sensor. Two of these are telephoto lenses, and both come with periscope zoom. The x3 and x6 combination allows Oppo to cover zoom ranges between 14mm and 270mm, albeit with the help of an AI-enhanced zoom feature in the software.
Curiously, Oppo is not leaning heavily into using “AI.” The press release features it just once, in the aforementioned “AI-enhanced zoom” software. Instead, it continues to use “computational photography” for these functions and wrapping them up within the “HyperTone Image Engine,” which it claims brings out more natural processing and reproduction of images.
The partnership with Hasselblad brings with it a portrait mode that mimics four set focal lengths from the Hasselblad range, as well as a master mode giving users access to the full range of advanced controls, including “manual ISO, shutter speed, EV, focus, and white balance… saturation, contrast, sharpness, and vignette control.” The goal here is to replicate the characteristics of the Hasselblad X2D 100C.
As with all smartphone launches, much is made of the camera technology. It’s an area where far more innovation can be packed into the handset and on the launch stage. It’s also something that consumers can easily relate to.
How it works in practice will need to wait for the reviews to come in.
Opp Find X7 Ultra
With smartphones moving towards an “Everything is the display” on the front of the device (just those pesky bezels and selfie cameras getting the way), the design and fashion cues need to do something striking with the rear of a handset. Oppo has done that with its split design. The raised camera island remains the central point, but where you would expect a large glass-backed lower portion of the handset, you get a textured wrap instead of the colder material. You’re not going to see this when you use your phone (and no doubt most cases will cover up the material), but it gives the Find X7 Ultra a distinct identity in the market.

What you do see is the display. Oppo has brought a 1600-nit display (which ramps up to 4500 nits when viewing HDR content). A lot is going on here, including a 1-120HZ variable refresh rate and support for the Ultra HDR standard, as highlighted by the DisplayMat A+ rating.
There is a catch, though. As it stands, the Oppo Find X7 Ultra is not a global handset. The model launched today will only be available in China, and Oppo has not yet announced plans for an international variant. Given the pattern of previous Oppo launches debuting in China before an international roll-out is confirmed at a later date, I’ve no doubt that the rest of the world will see the Find X7 soon
