Another day, another Wordle. Here we are, nearing the end of 2022, and Wordle remains incredibly popular even two years after its release. The word puzzle game has spawned many imitators, but it remains one of a kind—powerful in its simplicity and in its ability to bring so many people together each day to solve the same exact puzzle.
Other games have certainly cropped up to give you more than just one puzzle to solve each day. Forbes even came up with its own game, Frase, a fun anagram puzzler. Connections may be even more popular than Wordle at this point. There are many others. I even have one I’d like to build at some point, though I’ll need to learn some coding first!

Wordle Bot Analysis
After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.
It’s kind of funny that the first time I use crane in ages (it used to be Wordle Bot’s favorite opening guess before slate) I get pretty unlucky with it. 127 words remained. Only one green box was ticked. Slate would have at least gotten me a ‘T’ and an ‘S’ today.
Hoist did the trick, however, slashing that number down to just 1 remaining possible solution, which was pretty obvious right away. These was the only thing I could think of and sure enough, it was the Wordle!

I get 1 point for guessing in three but I tied the Bot who also guessed in three and that nets me zero. Still, 1 point is fine by me! Huzzah!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “these” in English is a demonstrative pronoun and adjective, used to specify a particular set of items or people close to the speaker in space or time. The etymology of “these” can be traced back to Middle English, where it was spelled as “þēs,” a plural form of “this.” The Middle English term evolved from Old English “þās,” which is the plural of “þes” (this).
The Old English roots can be further traced back to Proto-Germanic, where the word for “this” was something like “*þaisi,” which in turn comes from Proto-Indo-European. The Proto-Indo-European root is believed to be “*to-“, which was a demonstrative pronoun base.
Thus, the development of the word “these” reflects a common linguistic evolution, starting from a Proto-Indo-European base, through Proto-Germanic, into Old English, and finally into its current form in Modern English.
