Happy Monday, dearest Wordlers! It’s a federal holiday today—Martin Luther King Jr. Day—and both a time to celebrate the many positive ways things have changed for the better and to reflect on the many ways things could still improve. In some ways, it’s a marvel that someone as politicized and controversial as MLK Jr. was commemorated with a federal holiday, but I’m glad he was.
I have a list of MLK Jr. Day movies you can check out right here. If nothing else, these stories help us better understand the struggles that have all built up to this point and the challenges that still loom over our country and culture.

Wordle Bot Analysis
After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.
I used brace as my opening guess today because it’s so very similar to Wordle Bot’s new favorite starting guess, trace. It was quite an effective choice, leaving me with just 53 remaining words and one green ‘C’.
I decided to go for all new letters in my second guess since that ‘C’ by itself did me no good, and went with the always-reliable hoist, with surprisingly gave me now vowels but an ‘H’ I was pretty sure had to go in the final box (though, perhaps in both the first and final boxes).
Mulch didn’t quite do it, but fortunately I was left with just one remaining option: lunch for the win! Huzzah!
Today’s Score
Alas, I come away empty-handed today. Zero points for guessing in 4 and zero points for tying the Bot. Big fat zero!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “lunch” comes from the more formal word “luncheon,” which is believed to have originated in the 1650s as a variant of the word “nuncheon,” an old English term meaning “light midday meal.” The term “nuncheon” itself was a combination of “none,” an archaic word for “noon,” and “schench,” an Old English word meaning “drink.” Over time, “luncheon” was shortened to “lunch” in informal usage, referring to a smaller, quicker meal eaten around midday.

- -3 points for losing.
- -1 point for losing to me
