ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1068 Hints, Clues And Answer For Wednesday, May 22nd

It’s Thor’s Day, which means I owe you an explanation—for yesterday’s fun brain teaser! Every Wordle Wednesday I dole out a new riddle, logic puzzle or brain teaser to add an extra layer of challenge to your daily Wordle. Then on Thursday, I offer up the answer.

Here was yesterday’s, which I borrowed from Die Hard 3.

Today’s Brain Teaser:

A terrorist is going to blow up a bomb. In a phone call, the terrorist tells a policeman, John, and the policeman’s new friend, Zeus, that they need to solve this puzzle in order to prevent the explosion. They’re given two jugs—one 5 gallon and one 3 gallon—and a scale to weigh them on. They need to put exactly 4 gallons onto the scale. Any more or any less, things go boom. How do they defuse the bomb?

There are two ways (at least) to solve this.

Solution #1:

  • Fill the 5-gallon jug. Using the water from this jug, fill the 3-gallon jug. 2 gallons now remain in the 5-gallon jug.
  • Empty the 3-gallon jug. Pour the 2 gallons from the 5-gallon jug into it. Pour 1 gallon from the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug, which already has 2 gallons in it.
  • You are left with exactly 4 gallons in the 5-gallon jug.

Solution #2

  • Fill the 3-gallon jug and pour it into the 5-gallon jug.
  • Fill the 3-gallon jug again. Pour 2 gallons from that jug into the 5-gallon jug, filling it to the brim and leaving just 1 gallon in the 3-gallon jug.
  • Empty the 5-gallon jug and pour the remaining 1 gallon from the 3-gallon jug into it.
  • Fill the 3-gallon jug again and pour it into the 5-gallong jug, leaving you with exactly 4 gallons.

Now just imagine doing this with an actual time-bomb about to go off after running through the city following the instructions of some crazy German terrorist.

You know what sounds more fun? A Wordle. Let’s do today’s, shall we?

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

Sometimes you have to call a spade a spade, or Monsieur Spade, Monsieur Spade. Today, it seemed like a good opening word, and it wasn’t bad. With just 114 words remaining, I chose to keep the ‘S’ in green and try all new letters other than that one with SHOUT. This left me with two remaining options, but I never considered synch and guessed SWISH instead. lucky for me, that was the answer!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 1 point for guessing in three and another point for beating Wordle Bot, who took four tries today. Huzzah for me! I am the champion of the universe!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.

If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “swish” has an interesting etymology. It is thought to be of imitative origin, meaning it likely originated as an attempt to phonetically represent the sound associated with it. Here is a breakdown:

  1. Imitative Origin: The word “swish” is believed to be an onomatopoeia, mimicking the sound of something moving quickly through the air or the soft, rustling sound of fabric. Such words are created based on the sounds they describe.
  2. First Recorded Use: The term “swish” first appeared in English around the late 18th century. The earliest recorded uses are in the context of describing the sound of a whip or a rod cutting through the air.
  3. Evolution of Meaning: Over time, “swish” has expanded in meaning. It can describe any soft, sweeping sound, the action of moving with such a sound, and even the stylish or sophisticated manner in some dialects.

The word’s evolution showcases how onomatopoeic origins can lead to broader uses in language, adapting to various contexts while retaining the core idea of the sound it initially aimed to replicate.
