It had a little while on top, and managed to hold off megahit Wednesday a short while before that show returns for the second part of its second season, but now Netflix’s Hostage has fallen from #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 list.
Hostage, the UK thriller, has been unseated by Katrina: Come Hell And High Water, a documentary about the devastating hurricane in the US which hit 20 years ago now, and killed 1,833 people, wrecking New Orleans specifically and putting it underwater for weeks. The documentary focuses on first-hand accounts of the disaster and shows “never-before-seen” footage from the hurricane and its aftermath. It’s three episodes long, two of which are an hour and the third an hour and a half.
Hostage has done well, but as a limited series, it is not aiming for a second season past its five episodes. It’s true that limited series can perform so well, like Adolescence, they can break out of that classification and return, but I doubt that will happen with Hostage here.
In short order, Wednesday will return to the #1 spot when Part 2 of season 2 arrives after Netflix’s annoying month-long split of the return of the show after three years away. That will include the final four episodes that Netflix has been advertising (and spoiling) during this gap. Wednesday will no doubt remain there for a while, but all indications are that the second season of the show is underperforming the first to a certain extent. The good news is that with production beginning on season 3 this fall, it will likely be a much, much shorter gap between seasons 2 and 3 this time.
The rest of the list has The Hunting Wives staying inside the top 5 at number 5, which has performed extremely well. That seems destined for renewal for a second season, but who knows. Netflix just cancelled the well-viewed The Waterfront, so we don’t know what may happen with series that look like they’re hits.
Fit for TV, the Biggest Loser documentary, has fallen fast after previously being #1 on the service for a little while. Love is Blind UK is not performing particularly well, but it is on the list. I am somewhat confused about the Halle Berry show, Extant, being on the Top 10 list. It was recently added to Netflix, but it’s a 2015 series that almost no one has ever heard of.
So, we wait for Wednesday to reclaim the throne soon. Hostage may get back on top for a bit, but not for long, I’d imagine.
