In another report from Nintendo, we now know that the Switch has managed to sell 139.36 million units globally, but that still puts it behind the PlayStation 2.
The Switch has already passed the Wii and Game Boy sales, which is no mean feat. However, it still sits behind the Nintendo DS that shipped 154.02 units and the all-time record holder, the PlayStation 2 that managed to sell over 155 million units.
I had thought by now that the Switch would have overtaken the PlayStation 2, especially as we had big game releases such as Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom mid-last year.
Sadly though, it doesn’t seem to have been enough to keep the momentum going.
That said, the Switch has managed to ship an additional 10 million units since I wrote up its last sales numbers back in August of last year.
In short, the Switch is still selling strongly, but the real question is whether another Nintendo console is coming out later this year.
There have been lots of rumors, but I think we will just have to wait and see. Although, it will be interesting to see if there is a new console, whether it will be backwards compatible with prior Switch games.
To me, that would be a no brainer. As a new Nintendo console at launch would already have a massive software library to capitalize on.
The other aspect to a new console release, would that it would put a dent in the Switch’s sales and limit the chance of it overtaking the Nintendo DS and PlayStation 2.
Either way, this year will likely shape up to be an important one for the Switch’s life cycle.
