Star Trek’s Mr. Spock knew it: “Change is the essential process of all existence.”
Part of the world’s entertainment landscape since the founding of Paramount Pictures Corporation in 1912, Paramount is evolving by tapping into the opportunities of a digital-first world. Its streaming service, Paramount+, is “Unleashing the Power of Content,” drawing on an unrivalled heritage to put blockbusters, new originals, and iconic shows – such as Star Trek – at subscribers’ fingertips.
Building off their legacy as a leading entertainment brand with an unmatched library of intellectual property and the creativity and energy of their diverse global workforce, Paramount is connecting with everyone, everywhere.
Basing its vision on clear values and robust technology
Guiding this vision are the company’s values of optimism, determination, inclusivity, collaboration, agility, and adaptability – all intricately linked to employee well-being and Paramount’s focus on people sustainability. Paramount created a workplace and culture that is able to attract, engage, and develop their people while fostering a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment. Their investment in building great managers and great teams, being intentional about equity, fairness, and inclusion, and creating open, two-way communication has fostered a workplace that is empathetic and supportive of employee well-being.
Paramount wants to be a best-in-class employer and foster a culture that breeds creativity and innovation – essential qualities if you want to connect with audiences across more than 180 countries. As Nancy Phillips, Paramount’s Global CHRO, explains, “Our organization is focused on offering a world-class experience for employees, which includes creating a workplace and culture that can elevate our people’s contribution and help them thrive in their career and life.”
Technology fuels these efforts and allows Paramount to reach their global workforce wherever they are and provide the right tool at the right time. For example, the company uses the SAP SuccessFactors to connect HR solutions ranging from core HR, compensation, recruiting, and onboarding to reporting and analytics in the cloud.
Connecting learning and well-being
Also included in this integrated HR suite are Paramount’s learning and development offerings, which it recognizes as a key engagement factor. Providing opportunities for employees to capitalize on their strengths and grow, both personally and professionally, is part of its well-being approach.
The company not only offers on-demand mental healthcare services but also delivers targeted education on all aspects of well-being and provides a behavioral-change application that helps employees manage stress, improve focus, and enhance well-being. Such efforts help well-being become part of the broader conversation. Paramount understands a workplace that is inclusive, collaborative, and empathetic and lets employees shine as their authentic selves is best for everyone.
Johan Eerenstein, Senior Vice President of Workforce Enablement believes software accelerates the democratization of learning because it helps deliver a more personalized learning experience with custom learning paths based on an individual’s unique strengths, skills profile, and aspirations.
“We consider SAP software to be the foundation of our digital ecosystem and a critical enabler of our integrated talent ecosystem,” said Eerenstein. “Our employees can select learning opportunities and link them to their development plans and goals.”
Enabling a caring employee experience
On the communication and information side, Paramount replaced 15 legacy systems with a consumer-grade, personalized global intranet called Murray, powered by data from SAP SuccessFactors solutions. This single point of reference for news, events, as well as employee and workplace information is used to easily disseminate well-being resources and foster connections across the company.
Technology also helped the company globally expand its programs beyond more traditional point solutions. For example, onsite Employee Assistance Program counsellors can now offer their services virtually to remote workers on the days these individuals are not scheduled to come into the office. Employees also have access to text- and chat-based emotional health coaching and virtual behavioral health support.
Unleashing the power of people
While Paramount explores new ways to connect with a global audience of more than 4.3 billion subscribers, it will keep its focus on people sustainability and connecting with workers to protect their well-being.
“As the nature of work continues to evolve and as Paramount continues to grow, we’ll keep on developing the benefits, programs, and partnerships that empower our employees and power our success,” said Eerenstein.
Employees are Paramount’s greatest resource and what makes it extraordinary. As the company transforms in an on-demand world, its strategy is evolving to support diverse, passionate people who want to leave a positive mark on the world’s culture – and boldly go where no media company has gone before.
