X, The Social Media Site Formerly Known As Twitter, Suffers Outage

Are you having trouble accessing X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter? It’s not just you. Users in the U.S. have reported problems that seem to have started shortly after midnight ET on Thursday morning.

Issues with X seem to be reported on both the mobile app and the website, according to Down Detector, a site that tracks outages on the internet.

Many users report the site is currently just showing a welcome screen with the words, “This is the best place to see what’s happening in your world. Find some people and topics to follow now.” Unfortunately, people can’t see their feeds, as you can see from the screenshot I took below around 1:25 a.m. ET.

X owner Elon Musk bought Twitter back in October 2022 and made a number of controversial changes to the company, including major layoffs that engineers warned at the time might might hamper the site’s ability to respond to outages. All outgoing links on X were broken for hours back on December 13, as I wrote about at the time.

Users of BlueSky and Threads, two competitors of the social media company, were discussing the outage in the early morning hours of Thursday, with many people poking fun at Musk’s plans to turn X into an “everything app,” that even handled things like banking.

“The Everything App takes an Everything Nap,” one BlueSky user wrote.

Other BlueSky users joked that maybe it was time for Musk to create an account on the competing platform to let people know what was happening with the outage at X.

X did not immediately respond to emailed questions about the outage. I’ll update this post if I hear back.
