NEW YORK, NEW YORK – JANUARY 12: A friend of the photographer plays “Wordle” on January 12, 2022 in … [+]
You know the phrase about waking up on the wrong side of the bed? Those days when you start the day and nothing seems to click, and you’re in a foul mood and everyone annoys you and all the normal steps you take to feel better (exercise, meditation, etc.) don’t help because right after you do them something else goes wrong and you’re just at your wit’s end right off the proverbial bat?
Yeah. That was my Saturday. Just one thing after another and then a general sense of irritation that I couldn’t shake, even doing things I enjoy like lifting weights, hiking, playing video games, eating cookies. I hate days like that. The trouble with days like that is how much you’re forced to think about how much you hate days like that and it becomes this hideous cycle.
Then you get on Twitter and it all gets worse. Stay off Twitter, Erik! It’s a silly place!
In any case, mama said there’d be days like this and she was right. Sometimes you have to just laugh about it and move on. Such is life. So it goes.

Today’s Wordle
Wordle Bot Analysis
After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.
Today’s Wordle was rather elusive and had me quite stumped when it came especially to my third guess. My opening guess, anger, left me with two of the most terrifying green boxes out there: ER. There are simply so many words that end with that pair, even with ANG out of the picture.
This is why I guessed SLOTH. I needed to cut down what I assumed were a great many words. It turns out, I actually had just 120 words remaining—and SLOTH only slashed that down to 37. Not lucky at all!
With only grey boxes on my second guess, I had to make a guess and I wasn’t keen on using all new letters all over again. Plus, I was having trouble thinking of another good word in that regard, so I thought I’d use something healthy: FIBER. This left me with a better sense of what remained. Wordle Bot says I had three, but I only came up with two: CYBER and EMBER and I think maybe we had the former as a previous answer, so I went with the latter and thankfully got it in four—by a hair!
Today’s Score (Competitive Wordle)
As you can see above, Wordle Bot and I tied which means I get zero points. Zero for guessing in four and zero for tying the Bot. Oh well!
Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “ember” has its roots in Old English. It comes from the Old English word “ǣmerge” or “æmerge,” which refers to a glowing, smoldering piece of coal or wood that has stopped giving off flame but still retains enough heat to ignite. This word, in turn, is believed to be derived from the Proto-Germanic “*aimuzjan,” which also relates to the concept of burning or glowing.
The transition from “ǣmerge” to “ember” in Modern English involved typical phonetic changes over centuries, including the loss of the initial vowel sound and the simplification of the middle vowel.
This etymology reflects the word’s association with the residual heat and light found in dying fires, a meaning that has remained largely consistent throughout its history.
