Well, dearest Wordlers, it’s Wordle Wednesday again—the last Wordle Wednesday of November. Soon, December will be upon us in all its ragged, snowy, winter glory.
But, for now, we have not merely a Wordle to solve, but also a riddle since every Wednesday I spice things up around here with an extra challenge—a riddle, brain teaser or logic puzzle or somesuch.
Today’s logic puzzle: If all Grumkins are Cloogies, all Blumprots are Dabbledoggers, no Puffpops are Blumprots, and all Cloogies are Blumprots, is it true that all Blumprots are Cloogies?

Wordle Bot Analysis
After each Wordle I solve I head over to the Wordle Bot homepage to see how my guessing game was.
Spare got me off to a fairly strong start, though 99 remaining solutions isn’t ideal, and I knew that Wordle Bot likely had a pretty similar success story with slate. One green box but no vowels. So I decided to keep the ‘S’ and suss out a couple more potential vowels, guessing shout which nabbed me two more yellow boxes.
From here I could only think of two options, though Wordle Bot later revealed there were three. I had to pick between slush and sushi (smush was the third choice I didn’t think of) and went with the one that sounded tastier and more fun. Thankfully, it was also the Wordle! Huzzah for sushi!

Today’s Wordle Etymology
The word “sushi” (寿司) has its origins in Japanese. It is believed to have evolved from an older term, “sushi-meshi,” which referred to a dish of sour-tasting, seasoned rice used as a method of preserving fish. The term “sushi-meshi” dates back to the Muromachi period (14th-16th centuries) in Japan.
The word “sushi” itself became more commonly used in the Edo period (17th-19th centuries) and referred to the combination of vinegared rice with various ingredients, including seafood, vegetables, and occasionally tropical fruits. Over time, sushi evolved into the diverse and internationally popular cuisine that it is today.
The character 寿 (pronounced as “su” in sushi) means “longevity” or “auspiciousness,” and it is possible that this character was chosen for its positive connotations. Additionally, the character 司 (pronounced as “shi” in sushi) can mean “expert” or “person in charge,” which could reflect the skills and expertise required to prepare sushi.
So, “sushi” essentially means “sour-tasting rice” or “seasoned rice,” reflecting the central component of this traditional Japanese dish.
